Dr. Buie has served on the faculty of Boise State University since 2019 where he leads the trumpet studio, serves as the brass area chair, and teaches courses in music history, brass pedagogy and literature, and chamber music. Previous teaching positions include Baylor University, the University of Utah, and Western Wyoming College where he conducted the Symphonic Band and Jazz Ensemble. Following several years freelancing in Austin, Texas and Seoul, South Korea, Dr. Buie began his professional teaching career as Director of Bands at Marfa High School in Marfa, Texas, a position he still cherishes.

Dr. Buie’s teaching studio has experienced success from local to international levels. His students have been accepted to perform at the International Trumpet Guild, National Trumpet Competition, numerous all-state ensembles, the Korean Summer Youth Orchestra, the Northwest Honor Band, and into prestigious undergraduate and graduate schools. Dr. Buie’s students have gone on to teach at outstanding high school and college programs and to play professionally in orchestras, chamber ensembles, and commercial music groups.

Dr. Buie has collaborated with the MusAid organization as a clinician in El Salvador and Antigua and Barbuda to support music education initiatives. He established a guest artist teaching residency for Boise State University students with the Antigua and Barbuda Youth Symphony which Dr. Buie has led in concert on several visits to Antigua. In the summer of 2024, Dr. Buie served on the faculty of the Järvi Academy at the Pärnu Music Festival in Estonia and at the Festival de Artes & Naturaleza, a brass festival in Chelva, Spain. He will enjoy guest artist residencies in Austria, Hungary, and China in 2025.

Dr. Buie has performed or presented clinics at the conferences of the International Trumpet Guild, Idaho Bandmasters Association, Idaho Music Educators Association, Texas Music Educators Association, Utah Music Educators Association, Oregon Music Educators Association, Alaska Music Educators Association, California Music Educators Association, Association for Music in International Schools, National Association for Music Education Eastern and Northwestern Divisions, Korea International Music Educators Association, and College Band Directors National Association. He serves as a regular guest artist presenting masterclasses at universities and conservatories across the United States and abroad.

Dr. Buie is a member of the National Association for Music Education, College Music Society, Idaho Music Educators Association, and the International Trumpet Guild. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the Chamber Music Society of Salt Lake City founding their educational outreach program.

He holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Texas at Austin, a Master of Music from Baylor University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Utah. His principal teachers include Travis Peterson, Tim Andersen, Ray Sasaki, and Wiff Rudd.
